In Northumberland, close to the settlement of Bamburgh, is a castle called Bamburgh Castle. It is a listed structure of Grade I. From its founding in around 420 to 547, the site may have served as the capital of the kingdom of Bernicia, which was centered on the Celtic Brittonic fort known as Din Guarie. The fort was controlled by the Anglo-Saxons in 590 after three exchanges between the Britons and them. Vikings demolished the fort in 993, and the Normans eventually constructed a new castle there, the foundation of which still stands today. The fortress belonged to the English king after a rebellion that was supported by its owner in 1095 resulted in its confiscation. Financial issues in the 17th century caused the castle to deteriorate, but several owners rebuilt it in the 18th and 19th centuries. William Armstrong, a Victorian manufacturer, eventually purchased it and finished the renovation. The castle is open to the public and still belonged to the Armstrong family.
Built on a dolerite outcrop, the site was formerly occupied by a fort of the native Celtic Britons known as Din Guarie and may have served as the capital of Bernicia, the realm of the Gododdin people, from the time the realm was established in or around 420 until 547, the year of the first written mention of the castle. Ida of Bernicia (Beornice), an Anglo-Saxon tyrant, took control of the castle that year and made it her home.
Until the Crown gave another Sir John Forster ownership (or a lease, according to some sources) of the church and the castle in the middle of the sixteenth century, following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Forster family of Northumberland continued to serve as the Crown's successive governors of the castle. The castle was owned by the family until Sir William Forster (d. 1700)'s properties, including the castle, were sold to Lord Crew, Bishop of Durham (the husband of his sister Dorothy), as part of a 1704 Act of Parliament to pay off debts.
Bamburgh Castle has great air quality because there are no industrial sources nearby. In the daytime, sound pressure levels near the north-south road that passes through Bamburgh Castle are between 59 and 63 dBA (Northumberland Sound Mapping Study, Northumberland, England, June 2003). On the inner Farne Islands and Staple Island, respectively, breeding colonies of Atlantic puffin, European shag, and razorbill can be found close by.
In the 1960s, Brian Hope-Taylor began archaeological digs and found the Bamburgh Sword and the gold plaque known as the Bamburgh Beast. The Bamburgh Research Project has been looking into the history and archaeology of the Castle and Bamburgh region since 1996. The early medieval burial ground at the Bowl Hole, which is located in sand dunes south of the castle and was first discovered during a storm in 1817, as well as the fortress site has been the focus of the project.
